Skool's narrower category model can reduce setup choices. Circle's spaces and space groups offer more structure, but the value of that flexibility depends on the information architecture your team can maintain.

Payment and acquisition costs

VERIFIED FACT Skool lists Hobby at $9/month and Pro at $99/month.

Hobby's published transaction charge is 10% + $0.30. Pro publishes2.9% + $0.30 through $899 and 3.9% + $0.30 above $900. The exact treatment of $899.01–$900.00 remains unresolved in the wording; do not silently assign that interval to either band.

Skool acts as merchant of record and uses Stripe Expressfor payouts. Its official payment FAQ lists Japan as supported, but an applicant should still confirm taxes, banking, and account-specific eligibility.

VERIFIED FACT Circle displays $89/month for Professional and $199/month for Business; confirm the billing basis at checkout.

Professional has a published 2% Circle platform fee, Business a1% Circle platform fee, and Plus a 0.5% Circle platform fee. These sit alongside Stripe processing, which varies by account and payment setup. We found no current official Circle evidence sufficient to state Japan-specific availability or payout terms.

Keep four inputs separate: the subscription price, platform fee, payment-processing fee, and acquisition cost. Skool documents open, level-unlock, buy-now, time-unlock, private, and tier course access. Likes generate points and levels can unlock content. Circle documents course sections, lessons, media, quizzes, progress, ordering, and comments, with plan-specific gamification.

Both publish event and live capabilities, but limits and required tiers differ. Skool documents recurring events and native calls; Circle Professional lists events, live rooms, and live streams. Confirm participant and recording limits before choosing.

Automation, APIs, and SSO

Skool documents Zapier on Pro with member triggers and invite or course-unlock actions; we do not infer a general public API or SSO from that record. Circle places workflows and its Admin and Headless APIs on Business, while custom SSO is listed on Plus. Validate exact API endpoints, limits, identity flows, and negotiated terms before treating a plan as a match.

Choose Skool when

• A compact group, course, calendar, and level system covers the required workflow.
• The merchant-of-record model is preferable to operating your own Stripe setup.
• Your cost model survives the relevant Hobby or Pro fee band.

Choose Circle when

• Multiple space types and access patterns are essential to the community architecture.
• Workflows, APIs, or custom SSO justify Business or Plus rather than the entry plan.
• Your Stripe operation and the combined platform and processing fees are acceptable.

Exit and portability

Skool documents export of membership-question answers, not a complete reconstruction of community posts, courses, media, payments, automation, and progress. Circle's current cancellation page could not be re-verified during this review. Its pricing mentions bulk import/export, but the exact objects are unclear. For both products,complete portability remains unknown until the vendor supplies sample exports for your required inventory.
