Decision matrix

Prices are USD publication snapshots under the billing conditions shown, not purchase quotes. Confirm monthly pricing, taxes, payment processing, platform or gateway fees, add-ons, annual commitments, country eligibility, and exact plan limits before buying.

Decision dimensionThinkificCircle
Published plans and pricingVERIFIED FACT

Basic is $54/month ($40/month equivalent billed annually), Start is $109 ($82 annual equivalent), Grow is $219 ($164 annual equivalent), and Expand remains $499/month.

Scope: Published USD prices effective August 13, 2026; taxes and optional add-ons excluded.

VERIFIED FACT

In Circle's annual-billing view, Professional is $89/month equivalent, Business is $199/month equivalent, and Circle Plus uses custom pricing.

Scope: Published USD annual-billing equivalents; month-to-month prices, payment processing, platform fees, add-ons, and taxes are separate.

Published gateway and web-paywall feesVERIFIED FACT

Thinkific Payments has payment-processing fees but no third-party payment gateway fee. For covered creators who instead use a third-party gateway, Thinkific publishes additional fees of 5% on Basic, 2% on Start, 1% on Grow, and 0.5% on Expand; country, availability, and revenue-cap rules apply.

Scope: Thinkific platform gateway fees versus processor fees; verify creator country, processor availability, payment method, and current terms before purchase.

VERIFIED FACT

Circle publishes platform transaction fees of 2% on Professional, 1% on Business, and 0.5% on Circle Plus, in addition to Stripe processing fees.

Scope: Circle web-paywall platform fees; processor, regional payment-method, currency-conversion, and tax costs are separate.

Published learning and community capabilitiesVERIFIED FACT

Basic includes unlimited courses, quizzes, student discussions, and one community. Start adds certificates, assignments, live cohorts, and memberships; Grow adds more communities, analytics, group orders, API, and webhooks; enterprise SSO is a Plus capability.

Scope: Published plan comparison; exact limits and eligibility can change.

VERIFIED FACT

Professional includes discussions, events, live rooms, paid memberships, and courses; Circle's course model supports sections, lessons, quizzes, progress monitoring, comments, and self-paced, structured, or scheduled delivery.

Scope: Published Professional-and-higher feature set.

Documented export evidenceVERIFIED FACT

Course progress and group progress can be exported as CSV, including completion and learner activity fields documented by Thinkific.

Scope: Progress records only; this is not a claim that every page, media asset, or configuration has a one-click export.

VERIFIED FACT

Circle says it can provide a support-requested CSV export covering members, spaces, posts without images, and comments.

Scope: Published support-assisted export scope; not a complete portable reconstruction of a Circle community.

Documented cancellation behaviorVERIFIED FACT

Canceling the creator plan ends paid access on the documented schedule, but creator cancellation does not by itself stop all learner recurring charges; exports and learner subscriptions require separate attention before exit.

Scope: Operational summary of Thinkific's cancellation guide, not legal advice.

VERIFIED FACT

Circle says plan cancellation does not cancel member paywall subscriptions and that it typically removes community data after 90 days.

Scope: Published cancellation and retention workflow; operators must separately manage member subscriptions and export requests.

Where the choice turns

INFERENCE

Start with what customers are paying to achieve

Thinkific should lead the shortlist when buyers primarily purchase curriculum, assessed work, progress, or completion evidence; Circle should lead when buyers primarily purchase continuing access to people, discussion, live interaction, events, and a branded member environment.

Scope: Pairwise operating-model inference under the published comparison conditions; community can support a Thinkific course and courses can support a Circle community.

INFERENCE

Compare the qualifying tier, not the cheapest headline

Thinkific Basic covers a course catalog, while assignments, certificates, memberships, API access, webhooks, and enterprise SSO require higher documented tiers. Circle Professional covers the core community experience, Business adds workflows and Admin or Headless APIs, and Plus adds custom SSO. Compare the first tier that satisfies the real workflow, including applicable gateway, web-paywall, processor, add-on, and annual-commitment costs.

Scope: Requirements-to-tier inference from current public plan records; negotiated enterprise terms, taxes, regional eligibility, and exact limits remain outside the verified scope.

INFERENCE

Treat exit work as a buying requirement

Neither documented export proves complete reconstruction elsewhere. Thinkific documents progress CSVs and requires separate attention to learner recurring charges when the creator plan is canceled; Circle documents a support-assisted CSV with post-image exclusions and says member paywall subscriptions continue after plan cancellation. Request a representative export and map the manual rebuild before purchase.

Scope: Operational exit inference from published export and cancellation records; not a claim that either vendor cannot provide additional migration assistance.

A six-question trial plan

A feature checklist cannot establish operational fit. Use internal test accounts and one representative workflow to answer these questions before purchase.

  1. Can an operator build the representative paid experience without redesigning the business around the tool?
  2. Which required capability moves the account above the entry tier?
  3. What payment, platform, gateway, add-on, and annual-commitment costs apply to the real setup?
  4. Can each internal role perform its work without receiving unnecessary permissions?
  5. What member, learning, content, media, and payment data can be exported in a usable format?
  6. What recurring customer charges survive creator-plan cancellation and must be handled separately?
